Life Drawing - Set No.24

Life Drawing - Set No.24
Just like the last session we again tried a more fluid way of drawing, letting our marks move more freely on our drawings rather then making them sketchy. I enjoyed this way of working when it came to quick poses, as you can create a really sense of movement and help with looking at lines of action and general body shapes.

Deep - Clean up shot Perseus steeping out of door

Deep - Clean up shot Perseus steeping out of door
For this shot I was again given roughs to work from, taking another team members work I was able to clean up, colour and texture the shot. The finial frames proved difficult timing wise as getting the step and sizeing to work together was hard, I wasn't overly pleased with the end result and if time allows I will be going back to make some changes. I was however very pleased with my door animation and how well this shot matched up with my previously animated background animations.

Deep - Animation Shot Blue Meanies run away

Deep - Animation Shot Blue Meanies run away
Using the shots before it as reference I animated this shot, and handled cleanup, and colouring as well. In this shot the blue meanies make a hasty retreat in a puff of smoke, I again really liked working with this shot, as the characters where alot of fun to play around with and bring to life. It was suggested that adding a smear frame before the run would make the animation smoother, its an addition I plan to add before the final hand in.

Deep - Animated Shot Blue meanies screeching to a halt

Deep - Animated Shot Blue meanies screeching to a halt
Because I enjoyed animating the blue meanies so much I offered to animate them in a few more shots, while others animated Caroline. For this shot the blue meanies come to a hasty halt after being confronted by a rather angry Caroline. I handled the roughs, cleanup and colour of the blue meanies, I really enjoyed experimenting with follow through and seeing how this brought the shot more alive, I felt the results where successful.

Pre-production - Afterglow Concept art

Pre-production - Afterglow Concept art
With the characters now sorted I wanted to try my hand at backgrounds, after looking at the work of Joe Todd-Stanton, I played around with brushes and colour,  trying to get a textured and broken line background that would work with Els design. Although I was happy with this piece it lacks depths and I plan to work on other examples soon.

Pre-production - Afterglow expression sheets

Pre-production - Afterglow expression sheets
I wanted to keep drawing El so I could continue my style work and looking at how she would now move, I deiced to do expression sheets and I plan to produce pose sheets as well to continue this process and better understand my character.

Deep- Cleaned up shot Caroline twirling

Deep- Cleaned up shot Caroline twirling
As well as working on my own shots, I also helped out on others. Once one of my team mates had created the roughs for this shot, I went back into it, to start cleanup, as well as in-betweening an
d then finally colouring and texture. This shot provided to be a bit of the challenge as the original roughs were a little hard to work with, as more movement needed to be added in the body and the hair, I did this but the animation boils in places, something that could be fixed at a later date if we have the time.

Personal Project - Digital Flowers

Personal Project - Digital Flowers
Decided to try my hand at some digital drawing in my down time, looking at my use of different brushes and how I could still give the drawing a sketchy texture.

Pre-production - Afterglow new style Character sheet
As well as El I went back and updated my character sheet, this process was alot of fun and really let be get a sense of the characters, and how the style was working, It was suggested that I should also go back and try one with varied body shapes, to give them variation.

Life Drawing - Set No.23

Life Drawing - Set No.23
During this session we focused again on the skills we had learned from Martin Morris, trying to produce drawings that worked with the flow of a figure rather then making it too rigid, using this we also went on to try some larger tonal pieces, using the side of the chalk/charcoal to get a smoother more fluid mark, it was an enjoyable way of working and felt more free flowing then sketchy lines.

Edge Award Collaboration - Better Together new designs

Edge Award Collaboration - Better Together new designs
After a meeting with our tutors it was discussed that the post-apocalyptic element of the story wasn't needed, basing it in a war torn location, would be more manageable and relateable to the viewer. With this in mind deiced to make some changes to the designs, mainly looking at Syrian and African styles and inspiration, going with darker skin tones and textured clothing. Some of these a little too complex to be animated and would need to be refined.

Deflated - Pet Shop Layout

Deflated - Pet Shop Layout
With shots fast being produced, and a few shot changes I was asked to create another layout for deflated, using 3D references I was able to produce this for them quickly, they were pleased with my work.

Pre-production - Afterglow concept ideas

Pre-production - Afterglow concept ideas
With the new designs for my pre-production now taking shape, I spent some time playing around with traditional materials, to experiment with my use if colours and how this could be used. I also wanted to work on the designs of the fireflies to give them more character and a more bouncy feel.

Life Drawing - Set No.22

Life Drawing - Set No.22
Due to the lack of a model this week we had to use our selves and our tutor to draw from, starting with a series of quick poses, to warm up and then into longer shaded drawings. Drawing clothing and familiar people was an interesting change and proved some fun challenges when it came to clothing and facial features.

Collaboration - NBC Storyboards

Collaboration - NBC Storyboards
After speaking with two TV students and a Film student, I offered my help cleaning up some storyboards that were being used to pitch an idea of a Reebok advert to NBC studios in London. Each gave a rather rough stick figure storyboard and an ideas, I went away and drew up these for them, so they could pitch there ideas more clearly, they were very happy with my work and I enjoyed collaborating with other courses and working with different people.

Pre-production - Afterglow Style

Pre-production - Afterglow Style
After trying a number of styles, I deiced to use the works of Lorena Alvarez, the style was much more defined but also left from for texturing and a more stylized design. I was very happy with what I had come up with, and started some basics sketches and Ideas for El.

Personal Projects - Haythum and Depronn

Personal Projects - Haythum and Depronn
Some absent minded doodles grow into some fleshed out characters, a selection of drawings I've been working on in my spare time, I wanted to practice my use of inks and markers, so get a better understanding for different styles and possible ideas for the future.

Pre-production - Afterglow Style ideas

Pre-production - Afterglow Style ideas
After receiving feedback from my tutors on the style of my work, I deiced I needed a change. It was suggested that the style was too 'cute' and with out an artist to influence it, it was a little stunted. Following this I went away and looked at a range of artists styles and produced El in a range of different ways until I could find what I was happy with.

Over the Road - Background Work

Over the Road - Background Work
After my work on previous background I was assigned to work on two more, one a recolour of an already coloured background and the other a replacement for one of my backgrounds that belonging to a shot that was cut from the film. Like before I followed there watercolour style to create these backgrounds, I was also brought in to discuss possible changes on the backgrounds for the film as a whole, as it was felt that they were too dulled down and  didn't do the film justice. Although I helped out with style discussions I was unable to complete these background, because of other works and they were later given to another background artist to finish off.

Pre-production - Afterglow Thumb nails version 1

Pre-production - Afterglow Thumb nails version 1
With a rough script written out and and an idea of story, I decided to draw out some thumbnails to help me plan out possible camera angels and order of shots. This process also helped me better understand the story and it made it easier to explain to people as well.
